Wonderful piece, Tony. As an Anglophile, I generally found the British music of 1996 far more appealing than that of my own country (though I thought 1995 was a better year overall for music on both sides of the Atlantic). Not being much of a soccer/football fan, though, I never really got the appeal of “Three Lions” or understood its subtexts. Thank you for clearing that up for me!

YOu are welcome Dan. I feel that with different lyrics, "Three Lions" would have been just as big a hit as any other Lightning Seeds song in any other country. However, with the lyrics it has, it is pretty amazing that it has been a hit 15 times in 30 years!
